Rate studies of CoO catalysed autoxidation of S(IV) inhibited by methanol in alkaline medium

Abstract:

The influence of methanol on CoO catalysed S(IV) oxidation in alkaline medium was studied. The kinetics of atmospheric autoxidation of sulphur (IV) by CoO in the pH range 7.34-9.40 has been studied and based on the observed results a free radical mechanism is operative and a rate law has been proposed. Hence the results are useful for modeling rain water acidity and therefore a great use of meteorology and atmospheric chemistry.
